Butter In My Coffee

Brad and I have Bulletproof Coffee every morning for breakfast.  It took some getting used to for me.  I normally don't have a lot of cream in my coffee so this rich, creamy drink was very strange to my palate.

Here's the recipe - you should also check it out on the Bulletproof Executive blog:
  • Start with 2 mugs of good black coffee, brewed with mold-free beans.  Brad and I use Portola Coffee Lab's amazing coffee, and Alchemistic is my favorite.  Says the Bulletproof Exec (BE), "clean coffee actually fights cancer and provides antioxidants."
  • Add 2 Tbs or more of Kerrygold or other UNSALTED grass-fed butter.  Says BE, "Yes, butter.  All the benefits of healthy milk fat with none of the damaging denatured casein proteins found in cream.  Starting your day with grass-fed butter will give you lots of energy and it will give your body healthy fats that it will use to make cell walls and hormones."
  • Add 2 Tbs of MCT oil for max energy, weight loss and brain function
  • Blend with a pre-heated hand blender, Magic Bullet, or (best) counter top blender until there is a creamy head of foam
Why do we put butter and oil in our coffee?   Says Dave (and I've found it to be true for me as well), "It makes for the creamiest, most satisfying cup of coffee you’ve ever had. It will keep you satisfied with level energy for 6 hours if you need it. And because I’m having it for breakfast, I’m programming my body to burn fat for energy all day long!"

From Dave's blog:
It will take your body a week or so to fully turn on its fat digestion systems when you switch to a high healthy fat breakfast of Bulletproof coffee. If at first it is a little too rich, try using less butter at first and build up to the amount you like. Taking a betaine HCl or digestive enzyme supplement with your coffee will also help your body digest the butter.
Try this. After one drink of Bulletproof coffee, you’ll never be tempted to eat fat-free, insulin-raising, fat-storing toast and oatmeal breakfasts again!
 Cheers!

  1. Yes but what did it taste like? Is there a zero caffeine version?

    1. It tastes super rich and creamy. You can make it with decaf but you'll miss out on the antioxidants in caffeinated coffee. From what I understand the caffeine protects the bean from toxins and you want to have low-toxic foods. We only drink the bulletproof coffee in the morning to extend our fast from sleeping. Having healthy fats with coffee gives you health benefits and maximum energy for weight loss. If you're not looking to lose weight, you can eat what you want in the morning. Personally, I would try to stick with healthy fats & proteins.

  2. Is that teaspoons or tablespoons?
Have you done it with coconut oil, with the butter?
Rick and I are tempted to give this a try...

    1. Tablespoons. It may take a few tries before you get the ratio that is right for you. We use coconut oil with the butter and mct oil quite often. We use mct oil in addition or instead of coconut oil because it is in a concentrated form. You have to use a lot of coconut oil to get 2T of mct oil.

    2. We tried it this morning with reasonable success-- we used one tablespoon butter and two tablespoons coconut oil for two cups of coffee. It wasn't the only thing we ate, but I wasn't truely hungry until a late lunch time. I'm going to try it tomorrow as the only thing until I get hungry, and I'll let you know what my husband does. :)

    3. Janet, what kind of butter are you using? Can you come get some mct oil? The coconut oil is excellent for you, but the point of this coffee is getting the mct oil. This is from the bulletproof executive, "The healthy fats from grass-fed butter and MCT oil give you a stable current of energy that sustains you through the day. The MCT oil also serves to increase ketone production and boosts your metabolic rate by up to 12%."

I'm glad you made a choice to listen to your body and eat when you're hungry. I'd love to hear how it goes.

    4. We specifically went out and got some grass-fed butter from Mother's (called SuperNatural).
We don't currently have any mct oil, and I'm mildly skeptical about it "having" to be only mct oil. However, I haven't really researched it, so I don't know. My preference is to use only foods that can be found in nature (like coconut oil) that doesn't have to go through a refining process. I'll look into it more.
As for this morning-- I was not hungry after having my one cup (I was wondering if I could have two...), but Rick still was, so he had breakfast, which was a fruit/yogurt smoothy that we got from The Maker's Diet. Which included super greens and a fiber powder from Garden of Life (Yes, I am a bit of a hypocrite... unprocessed and all that...). I wonder how much of Rick's "hunger" was just habit, but he's always woken up hungry, and I usually don't.
First step: make sure butter in my coffee isn't gross-- CHECK!
      Second step: optimize the recipe!

    1. Hello Mumzee,

MCT stands for medium-chain triglycerides. You can click on the highlighted MCT oil on this post to learn more about where it comes from and how useful it is.

Coconut oil is made up of 66% MCT oil. We use straight MCT oil because it is in concentrated form. You'd probably have to use about 10 teaspoons of coconut oil to get a teaspoon of MCT oil.

We usually buy ours from iHerb.com.

  4. My sister does this as well and i tried it and loved it. I have a question though. I workout first thing in the morning and have protein shake following. Do you know if this should supplement that? I am usually hungriest in the am since I work out first thing.
    Thanks

    1. Susanna, I don't work out so I don't know how to answer. My suggestion would be to try it and see how it works for you. Check out the Bulletproof Executive blog. He does workout so, you may be interested in seeing how he makes it work. I'm glad you like the coffee, though!

  5. I really want to try this! Can it be used pre-workout? I usually wake up early, have a black coffee and hit the gym. Would making a bullet-proof coffee be better for me from an energy/exercise perspective?

    Thanks :)

    1. Thanks so much, Anonymous! I'm not sure about working out. Since going paleo and drinking the bulletproof coffee I haven't worked out at all. I know people do and I found this info on Dave's blog:

      Bulletproof® Coffee

Good coffee is magic. It’s no secret that Bulletproof® Coffee is one of the best ways you can supercharge your brain function and turbo charge fat loss. Every day, more and more people are improving their cognitive performance and shrinking their waistlines thanks to Bulletproof Coffee.

It can promote brain function, memory, and energy levels. It can serve as a massive source of antioxidants and is associated with all sorts of positive health outcomes. Coffee can even effect your body and mind like Chi Gong exercises. It can even help you build muscle without exercising. You never feel hungry, get low energy, and as evidenced by our conversation with Chris Masterjohn, the saturated fat is good for you.

      Also:

reisbaron says: Be sure to maximize the benefits of your workout by having a post-workout meal that's high in protein and contains fat. A NZ grass-fed whey shake, maybe with some almond butter would be a good choice if you're weight training. Either way explore this and see how it helps...it will!

For me, if I wanted to workout, I would start with my bulletproof coffee and give it a try - always being flexible and listening to my body.

Please let me know what you learn so I can share with my readers.

  7. Would Starbucks coffee be good for this? I'm in Taiwan, so some things are hard to get. I should be able to find coconut oil, but not mct oil. Is this till worth doing?
